Jude Calvert-Toulmin

Mi nombre es Jude Calvert-Toulmin y vivo con mi marido y cuatro gatos en Sheffield, situada en el norte de Inglaterra, con mi marido y cuatro gatos. Después de un segundo divorcio tormentoso y conocer a mi tercer y último marido en un foro de escalada en el cual nos enamoramos, todo a través de la palabra escrita, sin saber como éramos cada uno (mucho antes de Facebook o incluso MySpace) me convertí en escritora a tiempo completo. Mis experiencias inspiraron mi primera novela, 'My Adventures in Cyberspace'. Me convertí en conferenciante asociada a la Universidad de Sheffield Hallam. 

Empecé a venir a España en al final de la época dorada de Torremolinos, a principios de los años 80. Por ese tiempo conocí a mi mejor amiga Carmen Ojeda, ocurrió en un pequeño club llamado 'The Pink' de Fuengirola. A través de ella conocí al resto de su familia, que ha sido para mi como mi propia familia. Trato de visitarles varias veces al año y en un viaje que realicé este junio pasado me inspiró para mi sexta novela, está situada en Málaga y se titula 'The Vitamin Shot' ; varias de las escenas se encuentran en El Balneario, Baños del Carmen.

Aunque amo Málaga y Torremolinos, Sheffield es una ciudad maravillosa, famosa por su industria del acero, pero más conocida hoy en día por nuestra industria creativa en la que destaco como autora de narrativa y poesía plasmada en escenarios, también en la fotografía de músicos locales y estoy orgullosa de ser parte de todo ese ambiente cultural. Tenemos una música de clase mundial en Sheffield, con varios conciertos e increíbles bandas de vanguardia todos las noches de la semana, que casi compensa el mal tiempo. 

Hace 4 años gané una cena en un espectáculo televisivo llamado 'Come dine with me' perteneciente a la TV británica. Quede finalista en dicho programa e introduje la receta del 'Ajo blanco' a cinco millones de británicos. He sido músico callejero en el metro de Londres, geisha japonesa en el Club nocturno 'Sonobe' del barrio londinense Myfair, fotógrafa para una revista de música, he producido y actuado en varios cortos, he realizado un papel de protagonista en la película 'Johnny Yes No' con música de Cabaret Voltaire, una película que en parte inspiró Mulholland Drive de David Lunch. Viví en el Londres de los años 80 y no fue fácil, por un tiempo viví de ocupa sin electricidad o gas. Fueron años divertidos, Carmen o Danza Invisible eran visitantes frecuentes. 

Nada es más importante para mi que mi familia, tanto la que tengo en España como la que tengo en inglaterra. Tengo dos hijas Hollie Amaya y Jodie Keniana, un hijo Jasper y un nieto Reece. No soy  un éxito financiero, pero me considero rica más allá de los que hubiese soñado, con mi marido Brian, que también es mi editor, mi familia, amigos y tener el privilegio de dedicarme exclusivamente a ser escritora. My name is Jude Calvert-Toulmin and I live in Sheffield, in the north of England, with my husband and four cats. After a nightmare second divorce and meeting my (third, and final!) husband on a rock-climbing forum, where we fell in love with each other through the written word, without knowing what the other looked like (long before Facebook or even MySpace) I became a full time writer and my experiences inspired my first novel, My Adventures in Cyberspace. Subsequently I became a full-time author and an associate lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University. 

I first started coming to Spain at the tail end of the golden days of Torremolinos, in the early 80s. I met my best friend Carmen Ojeda in a little club called The Pink in Fuengirola, and through her, her brother Javier Ojeda and his family, who have been like my own family for over thirty years. I try to visit several times a year and a trip last June inspired my sixth novel which I´ve just started writing, partly set in Málaga and entitled The Vitamin Shot; several of the scenes are set in El Balneario, Baños del Carmen.


Although I love Málaga and Torremolinos, Sheffield is a wonderful city, famous for our steel industry but more renowned nowadays for our creative industry, of which, as a best-selling author performing my writing and poetry on the thriving open mic scene, and photographing local musicians, I´m proud to be a part. We have a world-class music scene in Sheffield with several amazing gigs by cutting-edge bands every night of the week which almost makes up for the terrible weather.

Four years ago I won a dinner party game show called Come Dine With Me on national British TV, then last month I was runner up on Come Dine Champion of Champions, in which I introduced Ajo Blanco to five million British people. 

I´ve been a busker on the London Underground, a geisha girl at Sonobe a Japanese nightclub in Mayfair, London, a photo-journalist for the music and climbing press and I´ve co-produced and acted in several short films, including starring in Johnny Yes No with soundtrack by Cabaret Voltaire, a film which partly inspired David Lynch´s Mulholland Drive. 

Living in London in the 80s wasn´t easy and for some of the time I lived in a squat with no electricity or gas. They were fun years, though, Carmen and Danza Invisible were frequent visitors. 

Nothing is more important to me than my family (both in Spain and England!) I have two daughters, Hollie Amaya and Jodie Keiana, who are a quarter Basque, a son, Jasper Jed, and grandson Reece.  I´m not financially successful yet but consider myself rich beyond my dreams with my husband Brian (who is also my editor), my family, friends and having the privilege to write full-time.
